Encounter with Kerstholt lifeboat after 55 years

Tonny Wubbolts

As a ship’s carpenter he had been working on the lifeboat 55 years ago and now he, Tonny Wubbolts, was surprised at the quality of the timberwork of our Kerstholt lifeboat. Dirk and Bart both paid a visit to a bookstore in Groningen to buy a few copies of the book “Van sloep tot prinselijk jacht”, concerning the history of the Kerstholt shipyard. It was the owner of the bookstore, Pim Albronda, who brought them into contact with his uncle Tonny Wubbolts Tonny has been a carpenter at the Kerstholt shipyard in Groningen for several years. He was very interested in the condition the lifeboat was in. This was the reason the Zuyderzeeroeiers invited him to come and see the sloop. As he was present, slowly memories of how things were done at the shipyard arose. His knowledge has provided us with a lot of useful tips and information. With this information we can continue restoring and rebuilding the boat

In searchof the history of the Kerstholt lifeboat had made Dirk Meijers and Bart Beuken recently travel to the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum in Groningen. Mr. Koos de Jong who is working in the archive for this museum provided us with some construction plans in blue print of the lifeboat we have in possession. The prints will pay an important contribution in restoring/rebuilding the lifeboat. Our goal is to find the right balance in keeping her authentic and optimizing her for sloop rowing.

Kerstholt lifeboat from New Zealand

We have bought a lifeboat in New Zealand, a sloop with a story, built on Dutch soil. Unfortunately she hasn’t been able to do what she was built for.
One of the reasons for us to give this beautiful boat a new chance!!!

We want to thank all people and businesses that help us repatriating this lifeboat back to Holland.
